PhD Students

If you are a current OU student or have been admitted and would like to learn more about working in the lab, please reach out to Prof. Wilson to set up a meeting. Your application packet will already be on file with the University so there is no need to share those documents again.

If you have recently applied or are considering applying to OU for a PhD and would like to explore whether there are any open positions in our lab that will be a good fit, please send a message to Prof. Wilson including the following:

  • CV / resume
  • Background experience relevant to the field of Natural Language Processing, Machine Learning and Deep Learning(including statistics, mathematics and general programming experience).
  • A small statement on
    • Your research interests
    • Your motivation for choosing a PhD
    • Why you want to work in our lab(it is helpful to say something specific that you wouldn't say about every lab you are interested in)
    • A very brief project proposal (if you have any in mind)
  • Any other documents or resources that may help you communicate your background effectively (eg: website page, Google Scholar page, GitHub, videos of projects/presentations etc.)

You will likely be a good candidate if you are interested in how we can use NLP to study online communication, are willing to learn about new topics outside of the field of CS, have a strong math and programming background, and are an effective communicator. Prior research experience in NLP or computational social science is a plus, but not a requirement.

BS / MS students

We often have opportunities for current OU undergraduate and masters students to get involved in our lab either for course credits, thesis work, or with research assistant positions. It can be helpful to have taken the follow (or equivalent) courses, but it is not strictly necessary: STA 2226, CSI 2300, and one course related to AI (e.g., CSI 4130/5130, CSI 4140/5140, CSI 4340/5340, CSI 4810/5810 or other courses from the Intelligent Computing track). If you are interested, please send us your updated resume and transcripts via email..
